Cleaning Your Showerhead – And Why It’s Time That You Do!

Part of your responsibility as a homeowner is ensuring that your home is clean and well-organized. Likewise, you have to check appliances and fixtures that need to be fixed. Hiring a professional plumber may also be necessary for your plumbing repair needs.

Since everyone showers or bathes every day, you should also know how to clean your bathroom. It need not be as complicated as you think – as simple as a quick wipe-down several times a week or a thorough cleaning once every two weeks

Most homeowners would focus on cleaning the bathroom tiles and scrubbing the toilet and sink. However, have you remembered the last time you clean your shower curtain or the showerhead? Cleaning the shower curtain is easy, but cleaning the showerhead is another story.

Why should you clean your showerhead?

Your shower is one of the most frequently used fixtures in the house. However, it is also important to keep your showerhead clean by removing buildup and limescale deposits. If you notice your showerhead not providing a consistent water pressure or is spraying all over the place, it is time to give it some deep cleaning.

If you look closely, showerheads have tiny holes that often get clogged with mineral deposits. This is why you have to remove them to keep the water flowing freely from the showerhead.

Also, cleaning your showerhead removes the bacteria and ensures better health for you and your family. Studies reveal that uncleaned showerheads contain Mycobacterium, a type of bacteria that causes lung disease). It often grows in the slimy film commonly present in moist areas, including your shower nozzle.

How to clean your showerhead

Cleaning your showerhead should not be as tedious and stressful as you think. You can descale your showerhead using common items you can find in your pantry. It won’t also take days or weeks to get rid of the deposits. All you need is to follow these tips and ensure your showerhead is always clean and bacteria-free.

Check the number of deposits present in the showerhead.

Before cleaning the showerhead, check first the amount of clogging on the nozzle. If the holes seem clear and water is still coming out, there is no need for a major showerhead deep cleaning. Otherwise, you might have to remove the head from the shower arm to clean it thoroughly. But if your showerhead has a stainless steel or protected metal surface, it would be better to clean it while attached to the shower arm as some tools could scratch the finishes and damage the surface.

Clean the showerhead using a plastic bag and vinegar.

Fill a plastic bag with distilled white vinegar. Attach the vinegar-filled bag to the showerhead and seal it using a rubber band. Let the showerhead soak in it for about an hour, then remove the bag and turn on the shower to flush out the deposits. Polish using a soft and clean cloth.

Deep clean your showerhead.

For showerheads with severe clogging, you have to remove the head first. Use a wrench with a rag cushion to avoid scratching. Rinse the showerhead with a blast of water to loosen and flush out debris. You can use vinegar and an old toothbrush to scrub the showerhead and a toothpick or safety pin to remove the remaining debris. Once clean, reinstall the shower head to the arm.
