5 Things (And More!) You Should NOT Flush Down Your Toilet

Things You Should Not Flush in the Toilet

Sometimes, a lot of people find easy ways to do things for the sake of convenience – like throwing and flushing items in the toilet. Sure, it does the job of getting rid of the trash without a trace. But the problem will show up eventually and you should do something about it ASAP.

One of the worst things that you don’t want to happen is a clogged toilet. Clogged toilet pipes means could mean expensive repairs and added stress. Hiring a professional plumber to get rid of clogged toilets is a good solution. But as the adage goes: “Prevention is better than cure”. Why wait for the worst to happen if you can prevent it from happening in the first place?

Why you should not throw everything in the toilet

Toilets are one of the best inventions ever. Without them, we might still be getting rid of human waste elsewhere. That is exactly why the toilet was made and should not be meant for throwing other kinds of trash. Otherwise, it can cause clogged drain pipes and contamination to the water system.

Also, take note that toilet pipes are usually only four inches wide. This means throwing even the smallest items could still cause clogging and plumbing issues. If that happens, expect to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for repair costs. If you don’t want to incur these unnecessary expenses, throw your trash in the trash bin instead!

Things you should not throw in the toilet

Prevent any plumbing issues by not throwing these items in the toilet (aside from human waste).

Sanitary products

This includes sanitary pads and tampons, which are made to absorb liquids instead of breaking them down in them. When you flush them down the toilet, they will only expand which can eventually cause clogging and drainage issues.

Diapers

Menstrual pads and tampons should not be flushed. What more with diapers that are bigger than these sanitary products? It also expands in water and causes clogging in your pipes as well.

Grease/oil/fat

You should not flush food in the toilet especially oils, fats, and grease. These ingredients are liquid but could solidify and cling to your inner pipes and cause clogging and blockages. Let the oils and grease cool and solidify first before throwing them in the trash or in other appropriate disposal areas

Toilet paper

Well, it depends on the amount of toilet paper you flush down the toilet. Too many wads of toilet paper can be hard to flush down and, yes, cause clogs in your toilet pipes, too. So the next time you use the toilet, use only the right amount of toilet paper you will need and avoid wasting it.

Hair

A lot of people experience losing some strands when taking a shower. Usually, people would throw these hair strands down the toilet, which is a no-no. Hair sticks in the pipes can cause clogs and build-ups over time. Throw loose hair strands in the trash bin instead.

Other items you should not flush in the toilet include:

  • Cigarette butts
  • Medical wastes and materials
  • Dental floss
  • Cotton balls
  • Condoms
  • Gum

Unless it’s human waste, all of these items should go to the bin. But if the inevitable happens (clogging, that is), call a professional plumber in Franklin TN immediately!
