Why Drain Worms Exists in Your Bathroom and How to Get Rid of Them

There’s nothing more disgusting than seeing wriggling worms in your bathtub. It is one of the most common plumbing problems that should be resolved immediately. These are called drain worms, which are commonly found in sink drains and even the toilet.

Drain worms are a type of worm that are found in drains, including kitchen sinks and dishwashers. Drain worms feed on food particles, grease, and other organic matter that exists in drains.

Most homeowners often use drain cleaners to kill the drain worms. However, this is not always effective and could even damage the pipes in the long run. Here’s what you need to know more about drain worms and how to get rid of them.

What are Drain Worms?

Drain worms and drain flies are the same but only at different life stages. The latter is also called moth flies, sink flies, and sewer gnats. They are also smaller than the common housefly.

The former are found in moist areas such as compost piles, storm drains, and sewage treatment facilities among a few. Drain worms are also found in nature and play an important role in decomposing organic matter. Anywhere with stagnant water and organic materials are home to drain worms.

Drain flies and drain worms have an important role in nature. But it should never be in your home, especially in your drains and plumbing system. The last thing that homeowners would want to happen is the sight of drain worms or flies infesting their home.

While they are not known to spread blood-borne diseases or bite humans, they can spread bacteria and contaminate food. It could also worsen symptoms of bronchial asthma in some people.

You would know if there were drain worms nearby if you see drain flies resting on walls. Sometimes, you would see drain worms crawling up from the drain. You can also put sticky tape over part of the drain to determine whether you have drain worms in that specific drain.
